What Happens If I Get A DUI In Connecticut?

DUI Defense Lawyer Montville Connecticut

If you are arrested for a DUI, you will be read your rights and detained by law enforcement. Your vehicle will be towed at your expense, and you will be taken to the police station by the arresting officer. There you will spend several hours in jail in order to “sober up”.

Once you are released, you will be ordered to make an appearance in court at a future date. Failure to appear for your court date will result in a warrant for your arrest, so it is very important that you attend. If you hire a DUI criminal defense lawyer, you will have the ability to move your court date within a certain timeframe, and you will have an idea of what to expect at your court appearance.

DUI punishments in Connecticut vary depending on the circumstances of your case and how many offenses you have had. Generally speaking, penalties are as follows:

  • First Conviction
    • 45-day suspension of license
    • $500-$1,000 fine
    • Up to six months imprisonment
    • Installation of an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) on your vehicle for one year
    • Completion of a treatment program
  • Second Conviction
    • 45-day suspension of license
    • $1,000-$4,000 fine
    • Up to two years imprisonment
    • Installation of an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) on your vehicle for three years
    • Probation and 100 hours of community service
    • Completion of a treatment program
  • Third Conviction
    • Permanent revocation of license (defendant must wait at least two years from the day of revocation to request a hearing for the reconsideration of reinstatement)
    • $2,000-$8,000 fine
    • Up to three years imprisonment
    • Installation of an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) on your vehicle permanently
    • Probation and 100 hours of community service
    • Completion of a treatment program

In situations where the defendant is under 21, has a higher BAC than .16%, and/or injured/killed an individual while driving, the consequences are more significant. A DUI convictions attorney will be immensely valuable in the mitigation of these penalties so that you don’t receive an unjust sentence from prosecutors.
