Arrested for Domestic Violence in Connecticut? The First 72 Hours Can Shape Your Future

When someone is facing domestic violence arrests in Connecticut, the hours and days that follow can be confusing and feel overwhelming. In this article, we’ll discuss…

  • The circumstances under which a domestic violence arrest is likely to occur.
  • How the police determine who to arrest after a 911 call is made.
  • What happens immediately after a domestic violence arrest.

What Happens Immediately After A Domestic Violence Arrest In Connecticut?

Generally, the basic scenario begins with two people in a relationship, often a husband and wife or significant others, getting into an argument. Sometimes the situation involves yelling, strong language, intimidation, or shouting. Other times, it may involve actual physical violence. In many of these situations, someone eventually calls the police. It might be one of the people involved, or it could be a neighbor who hears shouting and decides to report it. When the police arrive, they investigate the situation.

Typically, officers will separate both parties if they are still on the premises. They speak with each person individually and ask what happened. After that process, the officers usually confer among themselves. If they feel that the problem centers around one individual, they may charge that person with an offense (often an assault charge or another related charge involving threatening language or physical conduct).

Once that occurs, the case is classified as a domestic violence matter. The police then make an arrest and transport the individual in handcuffs to the police station.

In smaller or more rural areas, the responding agency is often the Connecticut State Police. In more populated areas, a local police department typically handles the arrest and booking process.

At the station, the formal arrest process begins. The accused individual is booked, processed, and asked routine questions. During this process, the police may also ask whether the person wishes to make a statement.

After booking is complete, the individual remains in custody until arrangements are made for bond or until the person is brought before a judge for arraignment.
